TMP Refining Energy Reduction And Pulp Characteristic Improvement Through Enzyme Application, 2016 International Mechanical Pulping (IMPC) Conference
Global changes in market and economy force pulp and paper industry to search for new solutions to keep their production process competitive and to develop new products. MetGen is a Finnish company designing and producing enzymes for biomass valorisation. Among the products proposed by this company, MetZyme® LIGNO™ is used to reduce refining energy during thermomechanical process. Here we described the impact of this enzymatic solution at industrial scale. Upon enzyme treatment, 12.5% of the refining energy could be saved, tensile index was improved by 15%, Scott Bond was increased by 10% and tear index increased by 7%. These results confirmed the results obtained at pilot scale and initiate further development of routine use of enzyme in the production process. In order to proceed with market launch of the enzyme solution and validation of the findings at laboratory and pilot scale, industrial trials represent an essential step to perform. Pilot scale results are required to rise interest of industry for novel solutions. In turn, confirmation of pilot scale results in industry consolidate the strategy used to bring an original solution to market. Close collaboration between innovative SMEs, research centres and industry is an essential way to turn innovation into product.
