Creping Operating Window – Adhesive and Modifier Contribution, PaperCon 2016
A wide operating window is a frequent demand by tissue producers for their creping adhesive package. A tissue maker’s ideal creping adhesive package provides optimum performance across a range of sheet moisture contents, fiber compositions and machine operating conditions. Optimum performance can mean good softness, long crepe blade life, good overall runnability, or any combination of these or other factors.
This paper explores the effect of adhesive and modifier characteristics on the creping operating window. Specific attention is given to the interaction between the overall coating adhesion, the coating mechanical properties and the resultant creping behavior. Experimental and modeling results are presented. The experimental work includes both creping and doctorability studies performed using Solenis’ unique crepe simulator. This work is paired with modeling results and mechanical evaluations of the coating materials.
