Does kraft hardwood and softwood pulp viscosity correlate to paper properties?, PaperCon 2016
The impact of commercially prepared fully bleached pulp viscosity variation on handsheet physical properties was evaluated as an extension of earlier work [7], with the current work including the effect of different levels of refining. Hardwood pulps from the same brownstock species mix, cooking parameters, and kappa numbers were processed through two different commercial bleach plants: one with D(EP)DD sequence while the second with OD(EOP)D sequence. Additionally, a softwood (predominately Scotts Pine) brownstock pulp commercially bleached in an OD(EP)DD sequence was employed in this study. Pulps with viscosities ranging from 14 to 20cP were refined in a Valley Beater to two levels and the associated handsheet physical properties were correlated in this study. No clear correlation was found to exist between the pulp viscosity and related paper physical properties, with the exception of zero span tensile which decreased with lower viscosity.
