Low Energy CTMP in Strong and Bulky Paperboard Plies, PaperCon 2016

Preheating and refining at temperatures well above the softening temperature of lignin makes it possible to manufacture high quality CTMP with low shive content at low electric energy consumption (<600 kWh/ton) for use in paperboard qualities. The energy consumption in manufacturing of these pulps is substantially lower than at manufacturing of the standard CTMP that is commonly used. Using feeding types of refiner segments, the fibre length of low energy CTMP from softwood can be adjusted to create the necessary prerequisites for good formation on paperboard machines. The properties of such high freeness CTMP, manufactured at very low energy consumption, have been evaluated as single component and in furnishes together with chemical pulps to find optimal combinations of high sheet bulk and internal bond strength. In such combinations the CTMP fibres are used to enhance high bulk while the chemical pulp fibres are used to enhance high internal bond strength.
