Feeding Point And Mixing Power In Simultaneous Feeding Of Filler And Starch, PaperCon 2016

The trend of feeding wet end chemicals very close to the headbox and combining the feeding of different chemicals is getting stronger in paper mills. Lately, dozens of mills have changed their chemical feeding system so that cationic strength starch is fed close to paper machine headbox and sometimes even simultaneously with filler. This paper focuses on the simultaneous feeding of ground calcium carbonate and cationic starch. Three different feeding locations of filler and starch were tested in a laboratory with the help of a Moving Belt Former device. The effect of mixing power during chemical feeding was also investigated.

Filler retention, formation and strength were improved when there was an increase in the mixing during the feeding. When mixing after feeding was increased, filler retention and formation still improved, but strength was slightly decreased. These results show that hydrodynamic conditions in the feeding and after feeding of chemicals can have a big influence on the performance of the process as well as the product quality. However, physical conditions and hydrodynamics are very different at the mill scale compared to laboratory devices. From that perspective, it is essential that we develop our understanding of the effects of mixing and hydrodynamic forces in the simultaneous feeding with different chemicals and raw materials.
