There's Always Room For Improvement - Flow Solutions In The Coatings And Additives Area, PaperCon 2016
Fillers are used in paper production to improve paper opacity, porosity, and printability, and as a substitute for fibers in pulp slurry. Operators need to monitor the density and flow rate of filler to ensure product uniformity, control costs, and to stay within specifications. Too much filler wastes expensive specialty paper chemicals. Too little filler can drop the paper's ash content below specifications. Filler slurries are made up in batches and sometimes plants have no continuous flow rate monitoring of the slurry as it goes to the paper machine. Some mills use “constant pressure head” as a way of maintaining a constant flow rate to the paper machine. In mills that use flow measurement devices, the most common are volumetric flowmeters such as electromagnetic meters, vortex shedders, wedge meters, and differential pressure meters. Slurry density is often measured with bubble columns and vibrating tube transducers.
