Aqua Layering Headbox and Furnish Optimization: A Tool for Process Flexibility and Quality Improvement, PaperCon 2016
Valmet’s OptiFlo headbox with aqua layering technology is the latest innovation in headbox layering. It provides good layer purity and allows papermakers to be more flexible when handling the process in order to get optimal end product quality. Present demands on cost efficiency with poorer quality raw materials are the key challenge in board-making, especially for test liner and fluting.
In test liner production, different producers apply different methods for furnish handling with the aim of simple process handling, but not necessarily with cost savings and/or improved efficiency in mind. Fractionation is commonly used for OCC cleaning, but the advantage of the different stock fractions obtained is not usually taken into use. Another tool claimed to improve furnish performance is refining. However, it has conventionally been argued that it is a disadvantage to refine OCC (and use energy in doing so), and thus it has been eliminated from being one of the key processes when considering tools for furnish handling.
The present article will demonstrate opportunities for OCC raw material handling, including new technology like the tube flow fractionator to evaluate possible furnish treatments as well as the sludge (waste) available at the mill site.
