Simplified Model Predictive MD Control of Paper Machines, PaperCon 2016

Increased loss of experienced workforce combined with complex advanced controls results in ever increasing pressure on paper manufacturers to look for Quality Control Systems (QCS) suppliers that differentiate on ease of use and low cost of ownership.

Machine-direction multivariable (MDMV) control is often perceived as an advanced control system with high cost of maintenance due to complexity of user interface and lack of simple intuitive tuning tools.  As a result, papermakers receive lower quality control results due to difficulty in maintaining and optimizing their QCS.

This paper presents a simplified MDMV solution that uses an intuitive operator interface and an identification, tuning and optimization workflow similar to what is currently being used in classic (single-loop) machine-direction (MD) control.  The simple interface allows the performance of the MDMV controller to be adjusted according to a few easy to understand parameters.

Field application data is presented to illustrate the performance and benefits of simplified MDMV control. The paper draws on experiences during the recent commissioning in North America of this advanced control type.
