Energy efficiency and profit optimization using advanced controls in cogeneration applications, 2016 Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling, Sustainability (PEERS) Conference Proceedings
Optimum energy efficiency has long been the primary objective for a cogeneration plant. With the increased complexity of power contracts and variable fuel cost, the concept of operating at optimum mill efficiency to maximize profit is no longer a valid assumption. This paper will present the process and financial challenges facing industrial cogeneration plants when they try to maximize overall profitability. To overcome these challenges, the concept of Steam Profitability Path will be introduced where Steam Path concept offers the simplest solution to the dynamic problem of variable power rates, fuel cost and steam demand. The paper will also present how the concept of Steam Profitability Path has been used successfully in the implementation advanced process control (APC) and Energy Dashboard for process monitoring.
