Industry Acquisitions Driving Steam Turbine and Generator Re?Optimization and Upgrades, 2016 Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling, Sustainability (PEERS) Conference Proceedings

The pulp and paper industry has seen a recent shift with mergers and acquisitions that will demand optimization of the existing industrial steam turbine assets. With the experience of building over 10,000 units, GE offers proven aftermarket solutions that deliver on our customers’ total lifecycle needs. Reliability, performance, and maintainability have long been hallmarks of the industrial steam turbine market.

The ever-changing landscape of the pulp and paper industry continues to drive the need for steam turbine re-optimization and complementary generator upgrades. Many local mills have been acquired by new corporate companies with varying goals and objectives. The utilization of the original turbine equipment may be different than when it was first supplied new. An audit of the new plant requirements can suggest dramatic changes in available steam, reallocation of process steam and varying demand for electrical output. Many of the turbine systems have never been modified and can be re-optimized to fit within the new manufacturers’ product profile. Steam turbines that have been re-optimized once or more in the past can be re-configured to operate within new requirements. Capital investment into the optimization of all the newly acquired or current steam turbine generators can lead to increased plant efficiency. In addition to specific changes in steam balance parameters, there have been quantum improvements in materials and design technologies to increase performance, improve efficiency, increase durability and extend the life of installed equipment. Modern analytical models have been developed, and results have been correlated to individual component tests and fleet operating experience, resulting in enhanced steam turbine and generator upgrades and improved integration of control systems. Improvements in design technologies and analytical techniques have also enabled the generation of more accurate performance curves and operating data. Regardless of the request type, a detailed engineering solution is required to meet customers’ changing needs.
