Port Townsend Paper’s Boiler MACT Success Story Part II: Particulate and Acid Gas Emissions Control, 2016 Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling, Sustainability (PEERS) Conference Proceedings
Port Townsend Paper Corporation (PTPC) operates a kraft pulp and paper mill in Port Townsend, Washington. The mill produces brown kraft paper from Douglas fir, hemlock, spruce and some cedar fiber that grow on the western slopes of the cascade mountains. In 2013 the mill embarked on a project directed toward improving the operation and emission performance of the No. 10 Hog Fuel Boiler (HFB). The boiler was designed to generate up to 250,000 lb/hr of steam while firing biomass derived fuels on a traveling grate. In addition to biomass, the boiler can also fire reprocessed fuel oil.
The project was driven by the coming implementation of the US EPA regulations for industrial, commercial, and institutional boilers known as Boiler MACT. These new regulations required reductions in the emission of carbon monoxide and particulate matter while still maintaining the compliance with State of Washington mandated nitrogen oxide.
