A bent kiln shell axis, referred to by the undignified term “dogleg”, presents potentially serious kiln mechanical stability problems;
- High pier load variation in the course of kiln rotation,
- At the peak pier load, shell ovality can become excessive enough to promote premature refractory failure,
- The horizontal component of this varying load pushes the support rollers to the right and left of the kiln axis with every kiln rotation. This load fluctuation can cause serious mechanical failures.
Typical recommendation for dogleg correction is shell replacement. There is a less intensive option that is preferable in terms of downtime for repairs and overall costs. The alternative option is also more effective in enhancing overall kiln mechanical stability.
