Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Analysis of Wood Pulps for Multiparameter Prediction, 2016 Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling, Sustainability (PEERS) Conference Proceedings
Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been used successfully in determining a number of useful parameters in wood fiber, pulp, and paper, and in many cases reduces the time and chemical waste associated with other means of testing. These advantages allow NIR to be used for real-time predictions of important parameters both at-line and in-line by utilizing a regression equation to correlate NIR spectral variation to the parameters in question. Currently, measuring Kappa number in pulp by NIR is an excellent way to monitor lignin content and predict the quality of the final product. NIR is also used to determine the percentage of softwood in pulp samples. Additionally, the benefits of NIR in measuring other important pulp properties such as viscosity, applied density, freeness (CSF), tensile strength, buckling strength (RCT), and breaking strength (SCT) are desirable.
