Online Kaapa Measurement Stabilizes Pulp Uniformity Increases Yield and Improves Board Machine Runnability, 2016 Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling, Sustainability (PEERS) Conference Proceedings

Green Bay Packaging’s integrated kraft pulp and containerboard mill in Morrilton, Arkansas has commissioned an online  single point Kappa analyzer with the objective to reduce variability in batch digester cooking conditions currently not well represented by time-delays and human errors in manual testing of Kappa.  Mill staff now use the Kappa number average and standard deviation of the instrument as the indication of how the mill is running compared to yearly goals and have discontinued using the manual test numbers. The pulp mill operators now adjust cooking conditions to reduce Kappa variations by more than 50%, allowing an increase in target Kappa number and higher yield. The board machine operators use its real-time readings to adjust speed and refining, while maintaining strength tests. Reduced web breaks on the board machines have been documented. A return on investment in the pulp mill and board mill has been demonstrated.
