The Safe Use of Extrusion Coating and Lamination for Producing Food Contact Materials, 2017 European PLACE Conference
The processes of extrusion coating and laminating are well established methods of manufacturing multi-layer structures which are widely used for packaging foodstuffs. Migration
of substances from these structures into the food must be controlled to ensure consumer safety and legal compliance.
Extrusion coated and laminated structures account for a significant proportion of the materials used to pack foodstuffs. This paper shows how such packs can be shown to be both safe for the consumer and compliant with existing legislation. It looks at the particular issue of Non Intentionally Added Substances (NIAS) and how they should be controlled and assessed.
