Extrusion coating and lamination nip characteristics variation for different nip roll covering material and process parameters – An experimental study, 2017 European PLACE Conference
Extrusion based coating and lamination is executed by merging together, between a chill and nip roll a solid substrates and extruded polymers. The main purpose of the nip (chill/nip roll) is to assure a controlled adhesion between all materials. Regardless line speed and web position the final interlayer adhesion requires remain quasi constant. Usually the nip characteristics are monitored by statically measurements (nip height and hardness). Nip characteristics variation (sometime >20%) due to dynamical phenomena results in variation of the layer adhesion. The study reveal how nip characteristics are modified when nip roll covering material and line speed are kept in an industrial, practical range. Finally, is presented a procedure to define, in a unique manner, nip roll characteristics parameters according with process conditions and requirements.
