Feasible Application of Hydrophobicity in Amphiphilic ACC - Nanocellulose Created by Aqueous Counter Collision (ACC), 2017 NANO

ABSTRACT ONLY

Recently, it has been found that characteristics of the nanocellulose are dependent on the preparation process: in general, the surface of nanocellulose has been widely presumed as hydrophilic. On the other hand, Aqueous counter collision (ACC) process has shown the capability to impart hydrophobic sites onto the nanocellulose surfaces.

The authors proposed the ACC process, which is a gentle and rapid method of preparing separate cellulose nanofibers (ACC-nanocellulose) as dispersion in water using only a pair of water jets, without the need for any chemical modifications. The resulting ACC-nanocellulose exhibited different surface characteristics from those for other nanofibers prepared in different manners; in particular it appeared more hydrophobic. This study involved how such a unique amphiphilic surface properties of the ACC- nanocellulose can be applied for functionalization such as emulsifier and nanocomposites.
