Multi Layers or drying strategy to avoid pinholes by sustainable barrier coating?, PaperCon2017

When applying, a barrier coating it is important to avoid pinholes.

The pinholes as such are developed in the drying process and can be avoided by either multi layers application or efficient drying technology.

To get a better understanding we can divide the drying into two phases . The free drying and the constraint drying.

The free drying is the phase when the water is freely evaporate meaning that the energy is utilized for evaporation and the temperature of the web is kept on a relatively low level.

The constraint drying is the phase where the surface has been dried and a skin (dependent on type of media) is developed. In this phase the drying/evaporation capacity is reduce to about 30%‐50% of the capacity of the free drying situation.

The renewable barrier media are film forming (which in principle is good) and a bigger tendency for skin formation, which then means a bigger reduction in capacity and higher sensitivity and thus pinholes development.
