Heavy Up and Slow Down a Machine, PaperCon2017
During the last decade, the majority of major paper machine rebuilds have been less focused on true production increases and more on equipment repurposing, energy optimization, and reliability improvement. Of these three areas of focus, the equipment repurposing projects have seen the greatest growth, at least in capital cost. Repurposing a machine from one grade to an entirely different product often does not follow the same thought process as the typical production increase project models. The final grade in a rebuild is often a higher value product, though possibly at a lower production output.
Engineers must consider the impacts of slowing a machine down on several key components of the paper machine system. Lower stock flows can be susceptible to dewatering. Variable speed motors on pumps and drives need a minimum speed for cooling. Machine bearings need a minimum rotational speed to maintain lubrication. This paper will cover several key paper machine areas and components that should be considered with any slow-down project.
