Polyolefin Based Waterborne Barrier Coatings for Paperboard, PaperCon2017

In the current market, polyethylene and polypropylene films are laminated or extruded onto paper and paperboard to provide a water barrier for a range of applications including both hot and cold beverage cups. Recently, there has been a push by several major end‐users of paperboard to move away from these traditional barrier solutions in favor of thinner or more easily applied coating options.1‐2 Polyolefin dispersions (PODs) can be created via a mechanical dispersion process (Figure 1)3‐4 that creates a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) and then can be diluted to a useful solids level. These systems provide an opportunity to use a similar chemistry but as a waterborne coating at significantly lower coat weights than those achievable via traditional extrusion‐based methods. In this work, a variety of polyolefin chemistries and dispersions were studied to assess the impact of several factors on the water barrier properties of the coating. Some preliminary discussion of other coating properties, such as heat seal and coating rheology will also be discussed.
