Impact of Conductivity on Paper/Board Machine Performance and Stability – Review and New Experiences, PaperCon2017

The current trend of increased water reuse within paper mills has resulted in increased levels of accumulated salts as reflected by increased levels of conductivity. Although conductivity measurement is often used in paper mills, its fundamental principles and interpretation are not often fully understood preventing papermakers from reaching the full benefits conductivity measurements provide in managing wet end chemistry of paper or board machines. High and variable conductivity impacts intrinsic properties of pulps, performance of chemical additives and the interaction between different chemical additives.

Principles of conductivity, its measurement and impact on important aspects of papermaking operations such as retention, drainage, sizing, strength development and deposit control and the fundamentals behind the impact of conductivity on the papermaking process are reviewed. Specific practical mill examples are also provided. Potential solutions for operating a mill under increased and variable conductivity conditions are discussed. Understanding conductivity measurement, its limitations, and its mechanisms help explain its impact on the papermaking processes and will help papermakers gain improved understanding of the potential issues associated with increased and changing conductivity.
