The use of recycled fiber in packaging grades is increasing due to limitations on virgin pulp capacity, customer grade requirements, and lower fiber cost (depending on market conditions). The benefits of a readily available furnish that meet customer requirements and lower raw material costs are straight forward; however, the use of recycled fiber can negatively impact machine performance due to decreased fiber strength, decreased dewatering capacity, and introduction of higher levels of contamination. These issues, if not properly addressed, can negate the advantages of using recycled fiber.
