Molecular Cellulose as Additives in Papermaking, PaperCon2017

Additives are often necessary in papermaking to achieve products with desirable traits that are otherwise not attainable by neat cellulose alone.  In applications where chemicals and foreign materials are not acceptable, modification of paper is possible by using molecular cellulose to make it mechanically stronger and chemically more stable.  In this study, we have investigated a method of coating paper with amorphous cellulose thin films from molecular solutions of cellulose in mixtures of ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIMAc) and organic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO).  Combining advanced x-ray, neutron, electron microscopy, optical, and scanning probe measurements, cellulose additives are found be pure cellulose, free of residual EMIMAc and DMSO, as well as truly amorphous, free of crystallites.  The mass density of coating layer approaches that of the bulk amorphous cellulose.  The all-cellulose modification improves paper strength, chemical stability, and water resistance properties.
