DOSING OF WET END ADDITIVES IN PREMIXED PAIRS AND GROUPS IN A FLASH MIXING REACTOR CHALLENGES OLD RULES WITH GREAT ECONOMICAL BENEFITS, PaperCon2017

Technology to inject chemicals and additives into the wet end area of paper or board making process has developed consistently during the past ten years’ time. Exceptionally fast flash injection mixing of wet end additives questions old practices and opens possibilities to develop cost efficiency and sheet characteristics. Chaos type of immediate flash mixing of additives into stock flow of board, paper, tissue or non-woven line makes it possible to exploit the additive efficiency with a maximal manner.

Measurement of reactivity of wet end additives can be determined based on RPA testing method. As a result, it is found out that with selected chemical premixed pairs, reactivity and efficiency can be improved. Reactivity examples with starch and polymer are given. In practice, once made with chaos mixing pattern in the flash mixing reactor, cationic starch and retention aid polymer premixed pare gives better efficiency than adding the chemicals separately.

By adding chemicals one by one in groups, very close to each other in the reactor mode, gives also better results compared to traditional manner.  Results in a board or paper production are economical savings, faster grade changes and also much better sustainability.
