Effective Biofilm Control for Maximized Runability with Minimized Corrosion Concerns Monitored On-line, PaperCon2017
Oxidizing biocides, especially on-site generated stabilized oxidizers, are widely used in wet-end. These compounds provide cost-effective kill of microorganisms in water circuits, however, among all the different stabilized-halogen compounds on the market there are significant differences in killing efficacy of free-swimming microbes in flowing white water compared to efficacy against surface-attached organisms. Similarly, there are significant differences in volatility of these stabilized-halogen compounds and due to high volatility of some of the compounds there exists machines with vapor-phase corrosion issues in places like press section and beginning of dryer section. A new approach was developed for effective control of microbiology with minimized concerns on vapor phase corrosion wherein a primary-biofilm killer MCDMH is applied in short loop and MCA is added for controlling general microbial activity in places like broke system. This solution, now patented in US, provides surface cleanliness enabling machine to maximize running efficacy. Case data is presented how this was accomplished while at the same time risk for vapor-phase corrosion was reduced. Corrosion rate was quantified on-line by a patented on-line sensor installed in vapor phase in the beginning of drier section. These sensors have captured on-line data how a biocide change has clearly impacted corrosion safety in the machine.
