New or Refined Liquid Measurements for Better Control of a Paper Machine or Coater, PaperCon2017

During a large part of the papermaking process, the components of the finished product are in a fluid state. Yet there are not a lot of product measurements made when it is in this form. Mostly, we measure process parameters such as temperature, flow, and consistency. It is time to investigate and control parts of the paper which are directly related to its end use and performance. Two of the constituents which are ripe for measurement are the surface starch and the coating (for coated papers and board). We can measure and control the shade of both using a spectrophotometer and proper addition of dyes and optical brightening agents. It is also possible to monitor the color of undyed surface starch to make sure that it does not brown due to high storage temperature or excessive holding time. This is particularly important for today’s very high brightness papers. With ColorLok® papers, it is important to make sure that the right amount of additive is in the surface starch. This can be done by measuring the charge of the surface starch. If too little additive is used, and the paper will not meet end performance requirements. Too much, and the chemicals are wasted, they negatively interact, and they are corrosive to paper machine equipment. In addition, some of our laboratory measurements can be greatly improved such as the measurement of freeness with the Canadian Standard Freeness test. The equipment used for this test can be made of a clear plastic with a removable, cleanable screen versus the present bronze units in place. They can also have integrated measurements of temperature and flow to permit automating the test procedure. So much energy goes into the refining of the fiber that it is high time this test be improved.
