Paper Machine Process Variability Improvements from Digital Technology Evolution, PaperCon2017
As digital technology continues to quickly evolve can we embrace this with a corresponding paradigm shift in our ability to better understand and improve paper machine process variability as it relates to automation systems? In order to effectively leverage this evolution several basic concepts of process variability must be revisited. A solid foundation in the relationship of process variability to sensor measurements, controller response, and process dynamics is required. With this foundation we can then leverage the digital technology advances to improve our ability to diagnose and improve process variability.
This paper will provide the needed review of key points to the understanding of process variability that are easily overlooked in today’s digital technology biased automation systems. While there are challenges in process automation driven by digital technology, we will present a method of leveraging this technology as a way to improve process variability in the paper making process.
