Simplified Model Predictive MD Control for Grade Change, PaperCon2017
Increased loss of experienced workforce combined with complex advanced controls results in ever increasing pressure on paper manufacturers to look for Quality Control System (QCS) suppliers that differentiate on ease of use and low cost of ownership.
Previously, an effort to provide machine-direction multivariable (MDMV) control that is easy to commission, maintain, and optimize was described [1]. Key features of that effort are: intuitive user interfaces, straightforward workflows, and meaningful tuning parameters. In this paper, the same concepts are applied in re-designing an automatic grade change package. The updated grade change package is powered by the simplified MDMV solution, Alpha-MPC, which, among other things, enables fast weight ramping while maintaining control of moisture, all in closed-loop. The set-up of the package consists mainly of choosing which variables are to be included in the automatic ramping and selection of appropriate maximum ramp rates. To maintain simplicity, no additional modeling, process data, or highly technical parameter choices are required.
