The TSO tester (Tensile Stiffness Orientation tester) has been used to optimize the head box and paper machines world wide since the late 80-ties. Mainly the four base properties have been used, and it is time to explain the use of the TSI (Tensile Stiffness Index)-area, and what it can do to improve the adjustments of the headbox or entire paper machine(1)(2).

The Presentation will use several examples from trials made to show the importance of the TSI-area, and what it could implement for any kind of paper machines or paper grades.

It will cover basic paper machine configurations, as well as cylinder moulds, dilution control and multilayer as well as single layer machines. The grades will cover liner board, folding box board, sack kraft, core board and printing writing paper. We will also discuss the importance of keeping to given settings, and having a good maintenance system. The Presentation will include the basic theories of the TSO tester as well as the correlations to the standard properties used for the various grades.
