The Application of Near Infrared Digital Image Analysis for Deinking Evaluation, 2017PEERS
This study continues to study a deinking evaluation using near infrared (NIR) image analysis method, explore its visibility in depth. The NIR image analysis method is developed based on a fact that; incident NIR light is fully absorbed by dark and/or black ink specks in a paper sample, but is reflected entirely by fibers (including lignin). A NIR compatible image device will capture a high-quality ink speck image with a sharp distinction between ink specks and fibers. In addition, it eliminates the influence from paper surface unevenness and able to evaluate sub-visible ink specks, which are hardly found by current visible image analysis method. Therefore, NIR image analysis presents an alternative method that it can evaluate both visible and sub-visible ink specks simultaneously. A monochrome camera, which is believed as a better imaging device than a commercial color camera applied in previous study, is used to discover its capability. A high transmission NIR bandpass and a NIR LED light assembly with optimized spectrum were applied to promote analysis speed. NIR image analysis presented its strength in overall deinking evaluation over its peer, visible light image analysis.
