Pulp Mill Installation and Operation of Standardized On-machine Visible Dirt Measurement, 2017PEERS
This paper presents new on-machine image analysis technology, called the “On-machine Dirt In-speck-tor” (ODI), which measures visible dirt specks according to Tappi Standard T563(1) and ISO Standard 5350-4(2) at sheet speeds up to 600m/min. At the end of 2015 the ODI was installed on the pulp machine, after the drier section, at the West Fraser Ltd Hinton Pulp mill. This report discusses the performance evaluation of the on-machine technology which includes a comparison with laboratory standard methods for visual(3-4) testing. Issues arising from visual, off machine(5-6), testing are presented. This includes intense short term dirt out breaks that are missed by laboratory testing as well as the importance of measuring both the Equivalent Black Area (EBA) and the Physical Sizes, for both the PPM and the number of dirt specks/m2. The significance of these measurements is discussed with regard to distinguishing small, light colored shives from other visible dirt specks.
