Novel Chemical Solution Addresses Organic Fouling in Pulp Mill Stripping Systems, 2017PEERS

Organic fouling in a pulp mill stripping system can negatively affect mill profitability if not addressed.  Until recently, the removal of organic-based deposits in pulp mill stripping systems had been limited to the use of mechanical means or potentially hazardous chemicals such as permanganate and hydrogen peroxide.  Most pulp mills have encountered tenacious, organic deposits that are not easily removed using conventional chemical treatments.  Solenis recently developed a unique, chemical solution formulated with a proprietary dispersant and a high flash point solvent that effectively addresses organic fouling in stripping systems.  This new chemical treatment can be used on a continuous basis to gradually remove existing deposits and to prevent future deposition or as a batch cleaning treatment.  The new treatment also has a better safety profile than conventional chemical treatments.

This paper examines the issues caused by organic deposition in stripping systems and the limitations of conventional chemical treatments, and it provides an overview of the novel chemical treatment developed by Solenis.  Results recorded from a commercial application of the new chemical treatment at a large Kraft pulp mill located in the United States are presented.  These results demonstrate how the technology effectively addressed organic fouling in the mill’s stripping system.  Benefits to the mill included increased throughput, improved workplace safety and reduced cleaning costs.
