The Effect of Smelt Composition on Smelt Droplet-Water Interaction in the Kraft Recovery Boiler Dissolving Tank, 2017PEERS
Smelt-water interaction often results in loud and violent dissolving tank operation, and rarely, issolving tank explosion accidents. This paper expands our understanding of smelt droplet-water interaction in the dissolving tank, by studying the effect of smelt composition on the interaction haracteristics. A mathematical model that describes the heat transfer between a smelt droplet and water was developed to interpret the experimental results. It was found that droplet solidification prevents the droplet from exploding. For a binary system such as the Na2CO3-NaCl system, or real smelt, the likelihood of a droplet explosion increases as the composition approaches the eutectic composition by lowering the complete melting temperature, and as NaCl is added by lowering the values of properties including thermal conductivity, density, and heat capacity of the mixture.
