REDUCING STEAM GENERATION VARIABILITY THROUGH ADVANCED BIOMASS COMBUSTION CONTROLS, 2017PEERS
Biomass is typically the preferred source of fuel due to its cost. However, grate-type boilers have a long combustion response time and this slow feedback loop will typically force operators to burn fossil-fuel or use a condenser to control their steam header system. This paper will show that variability in fuel bed shape factor is one of the most important disturbances to biomass grate-type boilers. Also, results from a new advanced combustion control strategy will be presented where changes in heat-release are calculated using a virtual sensor and controlled using a multivariable controller.
