In the pulp and paper industry, the impact of dissolved organics as measured by Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), can have an influence on the dosing of chemicals within the mill. Nutrient controls in wastewater treatment as well as the optimum addition of bleaching chemicals are areas where online COD control can have an impact on cost. Since robust online samplers for COD analysis are not currently available, most mills will resort to the use of a daily COD analysis as an indication of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD).
