Primary Clarifier Odor Control – Replacing Nitrates with Dissolved Oxygen, 2017PEERS
Primary clarifiers are often the source for sulfide formation and offensive H2S odors. While the wastewater sits in the settling tank for several hours, BOD degrading bacteria use sulfates as an oxygen source and produce dissolved sulfides. When the water flows over the effluent weirs, the turbulence strips out H2S resulting in odor and potentially corrosion. This makes the primary clarifier a major source of odor at a treatment plant.
Odors from the primary clarifier are minimized when the influent dissolved oxygen (i.e., DO) concentration is in excess of that which is consumed in the primary clarifier. Achievement of these concentrations using pure oxygen precludes H2S generation in the bulk water and promotes bacterial and chemical oxidation of H2S flux from the sludge layer into the bulk water. Also, there is a reduction in the oxygen need in the aeration tank or basin which is proportion to the oxygen consumed in the primary clarifier.
