Alternative Pulping Process for Paper and High value-added Biochemical Production, 2018 IBBC
Over the last couple of decades scientist and engineers have been working on various types of bio-refineries, alternative pulping processes, and maximizing use of available biomasses (especially lignocellulosic biomass). During the past few years, a team of scientists and engineers from Attis Innovation LLC (former American Science and Technology Corporation) in Wausau Wisconsin facilities have developed a new alternative pulping process that uses organic solvent (organosolv process) for producing paper quality pulp while simultaneously recovering high value biochemicals and a special form of lignin that behaves like other commercial polymers as by-products. Studies have been conducted to review the effect of various process parameters such as temperature, pressure, pH, solvent ratio, and process time on resulting pulp quality. The following article presents the new organosolv alternative pulping process, its products, and its economic advantages. The effects of the new organosolv and Kraft pulping on fiber length produced from southern pine are compared. Potential future applications and market demands for the new special form of lignin are highlighted. At the end, an economic analysis is presented explaining the feasibility of adopting biorefinery concepts and the benefits of the new organosolv pulping process.
