Some evenings, my husband and I like to watch old reruns on TV. One of our favorites is Columbo, featuring Peter Falk’s detective character in his signature rumpled raincoat.

The great thing about Columbo is that the mystery is never about what happened—the viewer sees the crime, and knows who did it, from the opening moments. The real fun is watching Columbo pull the threads together, constructing the case fact-by-fact, often disarming the perpetrator with his seeming absent-mindedness until that terrific moment at the end when he turns and says, “…just one more thing…” before laying it all out. The show’s magic is not in the facts; it’s in the way Columbo uses the facts to build the case. He turns the data into action, and the criminal has no choice but to surrender.
