The first-ever issue of Paper360°—August, 2006—included a cover story titled “Think Small” about nanotechnology, which was then something of an industry buzzword. I wrote that article. One of my sources was Dr. Art Ragauskas, who was then with IPST at Georgia Tech (now the Renewable Bioproducts Institute, or RBI.) Dr. Ragauskas predicted a time when cellulosic nanomaterials could be used in composites to reduce the use of non-renewable, petroleum-based products. “Nanotechnology brings us back to our roots…it allows us to rationally engineer materials at a fundamental level to get properties that we normally couldn’t get,” he said.
