Planar microwave moisture measurement, since its inception is 2000, continues to develop sophisticated instrumentation tools which greatly expand the utility of the technology into an ever‐expanding range of papermaking applications. This paper takes a brief look at the basics of how this technology works vs. older forms of water measurement. It also presents an overview of the various types of instruments designed for differing parts of the papermaking process.
Beginning with the forming section, practical applications are discussed with relevant case studies that demonstrate both improvements in process control parameters, and cost reductions. This theme is carried into the press section where powerful data analysis tools such as 3D felt mapping and Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) are brought into play with case studies that demonstrate the combination of water/permeability measurements, and diagnostic data analysis.
There follows a series of case studies demonstrating entirely new applications. The first of these is in the measurement of sheet water content in Through Air Drying (TAD) processes. These studies show that both the fabric moisture content, and the sheet consistency at various points in the process, can determine the overall water removal rate and resulting machine speed.
Case studies are summarized to demonstrate concrete and practical ways to minimize critical process variation, improve sheet quality and to provide financial justification for the initial instrument installation.
