Reduce Downtime by Eliminating Common Carrier Rope Problems, 18PaperCon

On many paper machines, an unacceptable level of downtime is tolerated because of easily remedied issues in the rope run sections. This paper looks at various rope materials, rope run tensioning, sheave size/alignment, and rope run geometry with up‐to‐date guidelines for proper set‐up and maintenance.

Premature rope failure has many causes which are examined in detail with remedies supplied for each.  The selection of the correct type of rope and rope material are discussed in detail.

Differing rope tensioners are required for proper applications.  In the same manner, rope tensions for threading vs. running are set out in matrix form with a thorough discussion of the rationale of each type and set points.

A final section looks at sheave shape and size with an accompanying discussion of which sizes are required for each part of the rope run geometry. Rope run geometry and alignment guidelines are presented with an explanation of certain geometries’ potential to create premature failures.

This often‐overlooked part of the papermaking process can be optimized with targeted crew training utilizing the best current recommended standards.
