A New Model and Approach for Optimizing Barrier Properties in Paper Coatings and Extruded Films, 18PaperCon
The role of mineral fillers in creating barrier properties in coatings is often attributed to shape of the particle. Indeed a common model that is put forward for gas barriers is based on a tortuosity model in which the mean free path of a gas molecule is increased and accordingly the permeation rate is reduced. This model can be well visualized but does not account for the equilibrium conditions under which most barrier applications are used or tested.
