Optimization of coating with water based barriers, 18PaperCon

Sustainability for personal health and the environment is a hot topic within the society. Consumers are searching for “green” products and in addition to this there’s increased regulations set by authorities for packaging material and waste.

This means that there’s a growing interest for development of renewable, sustainable fiber-based packaging products. Thus, during the last years there has been a lot of focus within the paper industry to find substrates and from the chemical suppliers to develop different coating media to enhance the properties needed.

Sustainable paper and board barrier products are needed to create an alternative to the use of conventional packaging solutions containing plastics, perfluorocarbon and wax. Products with a water based barrier coating are normally a more expensive alternative then the conventional packaging solutions. Therefore, to make the new products with WBBC’s competitive price-wise, it’s important to keep the production costs as low as possible. This means best achievable performance with lowest coat weight possible. The presentation will highlight this i.e.; the way of application and metering with barrier coating and how it’s affecting the performance due to different coverage.

It is well known that a pre-condition to enable barrier properties is to get a full coverage of the surface, since the barrier will not be better than at the weakest link. If this pre-condition is fulfilled then the barrier layer should have no defects, as for example pinholes related to drying (Järnström, 2013). The coverage is depending on different application- and metering methods as well as the base substrate.
