IMPROVING ASH CONTROL AND ASH GRADE CHANGES, 18PaperCon

Ash content in the paper sheet is one of the most important properties for many different grades of paper. It works as a filler and brightener to enhance sheet appearance. With its cheaper cost than fiber, there is a strong incentive for papermakers to add more ash and reduce fiber usage. However, the negative impact of more ash is weaker sheet strength, more complicated wet-end operation and possibly more frequent sheet breaks. To strike a balance, it is very critical to have uniform ash control and wet-end stability. Particularly, for grade changes, fast ash content change is crucial for both production cost reduction and machine runnability. Another important area for papermakers is maintaining wet-end stability during sheet breaks or when starting up the machine. In this paper, a number of improvements on ash measurement and control as well as improvements to ash grade change will be presented.
