Coating Rheology. A review and recent work, 18PaperCon
The evaluation of the rheology of paper coating suspensions and their impact on the blade coating operation has been of interest for over four decades and has been summarized in various publications. However, there is still a need for better understanding between the relationship between coating rheology, operation speed, blade geometry, blade loading and coating operational issues. Past work related to the rheology of suspensions and work to link rheology with operation conditions is reviewed. Recent work that involves a high speed blade coater is presented that maps out the operational window of high solid suspensions. A rheological parameter that explains the results is not clear, but a simple relationship between the solids, maximum solids and maximum speed is found.
