Catalyzed Pulping using Cobalt Salcomine, 2018 PEERS
There have been numerous attempts at developing catalysts for pulping wood including anthraquinone and related redox chemicals, Raney nickel and dicobalt octacarbonyl as hydrogenation catalysts, and copper phenanthroline and cobalt Schiff base compounds as oxidation catalysts. The Schiff base compounds, as represented by N,Nā-bis(salicylidene)-ethylenediaminocobalt (II) are of particular interest in that there have been three notable efforts to make use of this catalyst. The results from these efforts provide a good starting point for additional work on the Schiff base catalysts. The current project includes a synthetic component to prepare and test new cobalt salcomine catalysts, and a computational chemistry component to develop a reaction mechanism and evaluate the impact of chemical changes on oxidation chemistry. This presentation will focus on the laboratory work carried out at the Forest Products Laboratory and WestRock, under the auspices of APPTI (Alliance for Pulp & Paper Technology Innovation).
