Reuse of CO2 in Pulp Mills, 2018 PEERS
The pulp and paper industry is a globally significant producer of CO2 emissions, and is facing increasing demand to reduce these emissions. The emissions originate largely from the combustion of biomass and are therefore carbon-neutral. Fossil fuels burned in lime kilns are the main source of fossil CO2. CO2 capture and use (CCU) offers pulp mills the possibility to act as a site for negative CO2 emissions. This study evaluates the possibilities to reuse CO2 in the kraft pulp mill process and the effects of carbon capture on the mill operations. The evaluation is made by calculating balances for two reference mills, a modern Northern softwood mill and a Southern eucalyptus mill. The potential methods for both carbon capture and use are discussed, and the effects of their integration into the reference mill processes are analyzed. There are both novel and well-known processes for carbon capture and reuse. The technical potential for carbon capture in pulp mills is significant, while the reuse potential using currently available technologies is lower. CO2 capture processes are energy-intensive, but in modern mills, increased steam use can often be covered with existing boilers.
