NEW APPLICATIONS FOR MICROWAVE MOISTURE MEASUREMENT IMPROVE PROCESS CONTROL AND REDUCE ENERGY COST, 2018 Tissue
Since the inception of planar microwave technology in the early 2000’s, new applications continue arise as more sophisticated hardware and software are developed. Originally just for measuring water content/consistency in the forming section, new applications allow for moisture measurements of felts, sheets in open draws, and exciting new capabilities in the field of TAD fabrics. Process control benefits can be realized on tissue machines equipped with newly developed instruments with traversing permeability, water content, and temperature measurement capabilities. These scanners provide detailed data analysis including 3D mapping of the press felts in several modes, and Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) analysis of the incoming data to show pulsation and vibration issues before they become problematic on the felts, and provide a useful tool to the maintenance department, allowing predictive maintenance information prior to the “run to failure” mode.

The basics of planar microwave water measurement are covered to compare with older technologies. The significance of high sampling rates is discussed especially regarding data manipulation for diagnostics.
