SetPoint: Welcome to 2019, Paper360º January/February 2019

I love science fiction movies, and one of my all-time favorites is Ridley Scott’s 1982 film Blade Runner. I love the movie because it explores interesting themes, including memory, technology, and our planet’s fragile ecology. It’s also full of cool futurey things like flying cars, intelligent androids, and holographic photo scanners—apparently our future will be highly tech-enabled! The year this futuristic movie takes place? 2019.

We don’t have flying cars (yet), but much of the film’s other technology is either here or on the horizon. As for the movie’s themes, I think the pulp, paper, and packaging industries are keeping pace there as well—particularly in the area of environmental sustainability. In this issue, Senior Editor Mark Rushton speaks with Valmet CEO Pasi Laine, who comments, “It has been interest-ing to see that our industries have become part of the solution to the planet’s problems.” This attitude marks the beginning of a sea change in public perception of the forest products industry—and is the foundation for the technologies that will secure our future.
