SetPoint: Engineered for Success, Paper360º July/August 2019
I have previously mentioned in this space my love of poetry. I have also written about the ways I feel that poetry is similar to engineering: they’re both concerned with efficient use of resources, mathematical elegance, and precision. Both must pull together disparate elements into a whole that somehow achieves more than the sum of its parts.
Writing poetry is often imagined to be a solitary act: we all know the cliché of a writer scribbling away in a lonely attic. While it’s true that great poetry can never be written by committee, it is even less likely to happen when written in an experiential vacuum. Everything the poet has seen, done, or read—every person the poet has spoken to, every new path the poet has walked—is part of the well of experience from which a poet must draw. This sum of experience is the key to creating something truly special.
